[Bookplate for Charles S. Dixwell by G. M. McCall] This heraldic bookplate consists of a tilted escutcheon, argent (silver) divided per chevron, gules (red). Within the escutcheon are charges, two over one, of fleur-de-lis. A steel helmet, closed, situated en profile dexter(denoting an esquire rank), sits upon the escutcheon, with a stylized cross within. Sitting upon the helmet is a clenched paw (possibly lion) grasping a bird claw with four talons. The escutcheon is surrounded by mantling with banners both above and below, 'EX LIBRIS' in the above banner (along with a small fleur-de-lis dividing the two words). The lower banner has owner name and place within. Entire image is surrounded by an elaborate rectangle border, with fleur-de-lis at each corner. 122. [Bookplate for David Brearley by Vallance] This heraldic bookplate consists of an argent (silver) escutcheon containing a gules (red) cross potent. At the dexter chief of the escutcheon is a gules fleur-de-lis. The crest is a helmet in profile, without bars and beaver open. Atop the helmet, on a straight crest wreath, is a gules demi-lion. Below the shield are two different branches and a banner containing the Latin motto. 123. [Bookplate for J. H. Ainsworth by T. E.] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale. The gules (red) dexter of the shield contains a small crescent at precise middle chief, and three battle axes argent (silver), two over one. The battle axe is an ancient military weapon, and placed on a shield represents a mark of prowess. The argent sinister of the shield contains a gules canton at dexter chief. The canton contains a talbot's head, erased. The sinister side of the shield also contains a chevron, ermines (a fur represented by white spots on a black field). Atop the escutcheon is the helm, grated and in profile. The helm is topped by a straight crest wreath and an armored figure holding a battle axe in his dexter hand. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 124. [Bookplate for Stephen Langston] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon parted per pale. On the left, or (gold), charged with a chevron, azure (blue). Above the chevron, are three heraldic roses in chief, and at centre base below the chevron a sea creature. On the right, the quadrant is parted per cross, with quarters two and four, or, vair in pale, azure. Quarters two and three are sable (black), parted per fess, argent (silver). The quarters are charged with three cinque foil, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with the sea creature at centre base at dexter and a rose bush. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 125. [Bookplate for Edmund F. Bourke by T. Welch] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon quartered per cross. The dexter chief and sinister base sections contain a gules (red) cross on an or (gold) background. At the dexter chief of each cross is a lion rampant. The dexter base and sinister chief sections are each divided per pale, with an argent (silver) dexter side and a gules (red) sinister side. In the middle of these two sections is a lion rampant surrounded by three fleur-de-lis, two over one. Sitting atop the shield on a curved crest wreath is a cat guardant with leash. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 126. [Bookplate for Schuyler Merritt] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, a barry of six, or (gold) and sable (black), with a bend, ermine (white powdered fur, black tufts). Above the escutcheon is a helmet in profile (denoting status of esquire and gentleman). Above the helmet is a curved wreath charged with a chained beast passant. Surrounding the escutcheon is a circular banner, with Latin motto within. The entire crest is situated in a rectangular frame filled with foliage-like mantling in the upper half and a row of books directly below the escutcheon. An open book, three open flowers, and a banner with "EX LIBRIS" are situated in the foreground in front of the volumes. 127. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 128. [Bookplate for M. Nazapen] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three mullets at fess point and a crescent below, held aloft by two cubit arms. The escutcheon is supported by lions, positioned rampant guardant at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at a direct front view with a grated helm. Upon the helmet is a ducal coronet, from which three large plumes extend, along with elaborate mantling. Above the mantling and supporters are two crests: at dexter, a straight wreath is charged with an arm embowed with armour, clutching a scimitar. At sinister, a straight wreath is charged with arm embowed, clutching a Scottish flag. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 129. [Bookplate for John Darby] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a chevron, argent (silver), with the lower part a fillet. Upon the escutcheon are three sheaves of wheat (possibly corn, garbe), two over one . A military medal is at centre chief, with the word "NILE" immediately below. Within the chevron, an anchor each at dexter and sinister, with a naval crown at centre. Above the escutcheon is a crest of a sheaf of wheat (or possibly corn, garbe) and an anchor, upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 130. [Bookplate for Dunbar of Westfield by C. Norton] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross, the upper half gules (red) and or (gold), the lower half or and gules. Each quarter consists of a border ; quarter 1 and 4 are bordered with argent (silver) and heraldic roses, and charged with a lion rampant. Quarters 2 and 3 have a narrow border decorated by trefoil, charged with three round figures apiece. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant at dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a steel helmet, placed three-quartered (indicating esquire status). Above the helmet is a crest of a dexter arm proper (bare) upon a wreath. From the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Above the crest are two crowns with the Latin motto above. Below the escutcheon and supporters is a banner with an additonal Latin motto within. 131. [Bookplate for Albert Prince by Dempsey and Carroll] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross, with quarters one and four also divided per cross. Within quarters one and four, the sub-quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with three lions passant guardant (for England). Sub-quarter two is or (gold), with a tressure-flory-counter -flory, charged with a lion rampant (for Scotland). Subquarter three is azure (blue), charged with a harp decorated with harpy figure features, stringed (for Ireland). The entire escutcheon is charged with a bar dovetailed, or a label, a cadency mark indicating being the eldest son (during his father's lifetime). Quarters two and three have a barry of ten, or and sable (black), with a bend in the shape of a ducal crown (without the cap). Surrounding the escutcheon is a garter, with first French motto within. Above the escutcheon is a royal crown. Supporting the escutcheon at dexter is a lion guardant, charged with a label. The entire achievement is surrounded by very fine lines, giving the impression of shadow. 132. [Bookplate for Cosmo Nevill] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross. Quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with a saltier, ermine (fur, white powdered with black tufts). Quarters two and three are argent (silver), with a fretty of eight pieces, gules. Quarters two and three have a canton at dexter chief, divided per pale, or (gold) and argent, charged with a galley with three masts. Above the primary escutcheon is a grated helmet at three-quarters profile (denoting a degree of peerage under a duke). Above the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a ducal coronet around an ox head, erased and ermine. Radiating from the helmet and escutcheon is elaborate mantling. [Bookplate for John Wingfield Larking] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, ermine, charged with three heads of wildcats, possibly lions. Above the escutcheon is a closed helmet, placed in profile, denoting the rank of an esquire or a gentleman, from which, elaborate mantling flows. Upon the helmet is a curved wreath, with a crest of a bird, wings elevated and displayed, holding a branch in its beak. 135. [Bookplate for Lord Francis Gray by Daniel Lizars and William Home] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with a lion rampant, with an engrailed bordure, argent (silver). The shield is supported by a lion rampant guardant on each site. Above the shield is a crown denoting baron status, and directly above the crown is a crest of an anchor upon a straight wreath. Immediately below the shield is another crest, a swan, also upon a straight wreath. Extending out from the bottom of the shield are two banners, with bookplate test within. The bookplate is bordered by an elaborate leaf design. 136. [Bookplate for Edward Loveden] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a bend, cottised vert (green) and sable (black). The escutcheon is charged with four sinister hands, roughly at centre chief, sinister, dexter, and centre base. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a heraldic tiger, sejant (sitting position). 137. [Bookplate for John Lechmere] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a fess, or (gold). Above the fess at dexter and sinister chief, the escutcheon is charged with two birds, possibly pelicans, wings addorsed and inverted. Above the escutcheon is a ducal crown without a cap, which is charged with the same bird, wings addorsed and inverted. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto inside. 138. [Bookplate for Robert Edward Lord Petre] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a simple bend, or (gold), charged with two escallop at dexter base and sinister chief. [Bookplate for William Hulme] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per cross. Quarters one and four are parted per pale, with dexter half argent (silver) and sinister half with a barry of eight argent and vert (green). The quarters are charged with two bendlets, one invected. Quarters two and three are argent, parted per chevron, charged with two chaplets and a lion's head erased, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a viscount crown, without the cap or fur, and above the crown is a helmet, positioned in three-quarters profile, indicating the status of peer. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a cock with a heraldric rose, standing upon a trumpet. Elaborate mantling and banner containing Latin motto radiates out from the helmet, and two elephants support the shield. The elephant at dexter is charged with another heraldic rose, and the elephant at sinister is charged with another chaplet. Below the shield is a banner, with name of bookplate owner. 140. [Bookplate for John Orde] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. At dexter, the escutcheon is sable (black), charged with three fish, two over one, huariant. Above the fish is an escutcheon, argent (silver), with the hand of Ulster ; a dexter hand, gules (red), indicating knight status. At sinister, the escutcheon is or (gold), with a flasque gules. The flasque is charged with wild cat heads, one over one. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a stag's head erased. The stag's neck is also charged with a band, gules and engrailed.
